10 Ways To Prepare For Your Boudoir Session

So you’ve booked your session… or maybe you’re interested in learning more about what your experience would look like.

Well, as with any life-changing adventure, leading up to your boudoir shoot, a bit of preparation is key.

Whether your session is on the calendar already or you want to know the details of preparation before booking a session, here are 10 ways to prepare for your session:

Self Care:

  • 1) Drink Water: Drinking water makes you hydrated and when you’re hydrated, your skin glows. Water is the cheapest beauty enhancer.

  • 2) Make Sure You Eat: Now is not the time to try a new diet or restrict your eating. You will need energy for our session. Let’s photograph the healthiest and most energized version of you.

  • 3) Get Plenty of Sleep: Get your beauty rest. It makes all the difference in the way your body behaves and the way you carry yourself during our session. Beauty rest is also a great excuse to cancel plans... If you’ve cycled through all your other excuses already.

  • 4) Meditate: Boudoir photography sessions are essentially a meditation of body confidence. But you don’t have to wait until our session to channel this energy. You’ll find that meditation comes in various forms. It may be sitting on a yoga mat and centering yourself at different points of the day. It is also anything that makes you feel good and get in tune with yourself. These activities can be leisurely like reading or taking a walk. Before your session make sure you have practiced centering yourself. So you can breathe through the poses and be your most confident self.

Grooming:

  • 5) Hair Styles: Please don’t do anything drastic to your hair. That risky hairstyle that you’ve been dying to try, I’m sure it will look great when you get it...After our shoot! In order to avoid the worst-case scenario, wait until after our shoot to try anything new. If you want to get a trim or your roots touched up, I recommend doing so 1 - 2 weeks before your session.

  • 6) Waxing/Shaving: I also recommend doing what is in your comfort zone for waxing, shaving, and hair removal. There isn’t a specific beauty standard to adhere to so do what makes you feel best. Maybe don’t try any new products because they may cause a rash or other allergic reaction. Do any hair removal treatments 1-2 weeks before our session.

Wardrobe:

  • 7) Raiding Your Closet: You may feel tempted to get a bunch of new clothes for our session but take a peek in your closet first. Even take a thorough dig through that box you swear, you’re going to get rid of but still haven’t. The clothes in your closet are in your closet for a reason. You cherish them. Take a look through them and pick out your favorite things. You already know how they fit and how they make you feel so, they are the perfect jumping-off point for building a wardrobe for your session!

  • 8) New Clothes: When buying new clothes, make sure you try them on before bringing them to your session. If buying clothes online, read the reviews before making a purchase so you’ll have an idea of the quality and fit beforehand.

Research and Plan:

  • 9) Social Media: You can use social media to see what boudoir photography can be. I have an Instagram (view here) and Facebook page (view here) where I post photos from sessions. You can also scroll through and see previous people I’ve worked with.

  • 10) Vision Board: You are not just the muse but also the artist. Our session should be a collaboration between your wants and my craft. If you have any outfit, prop, or theme ideas please come with a visual representation of them. These can be Pinterest boards or saved Instagram images.

Love, preparation is key.

All of these small and simple steps make a big difference when it comes to the big day.
